Question; do you switch up your hair care with the seasons? I’m guessing most of you do but this is something I haven’t always given much thought towards! Winter calls for more moisture while the spring and summer are more about protecting your hair from the elements, such as the beach or chlorine. A Few Ways to Protect Your Hair This Spring/Summer..
1. Protect your hair from chlorine with a hydrating conditioner.
Most people swim a lot during the summer..duh! But what they don’t do, is take care of their hair before and after doing so. Chlorine can be nasty on your hair, stripping it of almost all it’s moisture, so here’s how to avoid that. First off, never wash your hair right before you take a dip in the pool. As a result, you’ll strip your hair of it’s only defense against chlorine: your scalps natural oils!
Secondly, after you swim be sure to wash your hair with a repairing and replenishing conditioner. My tried and true favorite is Juice Organics Coconut Reparing Conditioner. After receiving this conditioner, I gave myself some time to put this product to the test before writing about it. I am happy to report back that it works wonders! For sometime now, I’ve struggled with dry flakes, so moisture is something my hair is always in need of. I love this conditioner because it truly does moisturize hair but it’s also cruelty-free, leaping bunny certified. It’s no wonder that this product is effective as it contains coconut, plant protein and Vitamin B5, jojoba oil and argan oils. Talk about an affective combination!
When doing research for this blog post I stumbled upon a really interesting tip worth including! Blogger “Nutrition Stripped,” recommends wetting your hair and then applying conditioner to your hair before swimming. This practice gives your locks a defensive layer against the harmful drying effects of chlorine. You can read more about her tips for summer hair care in her article here.
2. Go heatless this summer!
This is a lifestyle change that’s great year round (and one that I adhere to) but is also incredibly important during the summer. When you think about it, it makes sense that during the months when heat can be an issue, that you shouldn’t put more heat on your hair via hot tools. It just puts more unnecessary stress on your locks. So here’s my recommendation: always wash your hair 30 minutes before going somewhere, to give your hair time to dry prior to washing. If you have naturally curly/wavy hair, learn how to embrace your curls!
Try styling it with product and getting a haircut that compliments it! If you don’t, or even if you do, now’s the perfect time to experiment with updos too. Learn how to dutch braid or fishtail, maybe even throw your hair up in a bun with a scrunchie or a scarf like the ones from Madewell. The bright side to all of this, is that these hairstyles are super in anyways! Updos are always great for staying cool and sweating less too.
3. Take care to shampoo less and when you do, use the right product.
The summer sun can be very brutal on your hair, which is why you should resist the urge to over wash. It’s a nasty cycle you can get into if you over shampoo. Basically what happens is the sun robs your hair of moisture and causes frizz and dryness. You then rush to the shower to clean your scalp, stripping it of most of it’s natural oils. Then you go swimming in chlorine or spend the day in the sun. What happens as a result? Your hair overproduces oil because you’re so short on it! The answer instead, is to wash your hair less. I know it’s not always the easiest but it works wonders on the health of your hair. Try washing every two days and experiment with cute braids on days in between.
And when you do shampoo, make sure your product is working for you, not against! A shampoo that can aid in moisturization is key, so make sure you choose one with the right ingredients. In doing so, your choice shampoo will cleanse while still moisturizing! my shampoo of choice is Juice Organics repairing shampoo. I put this product to the test along with the conditioner and, well, I was wowed.. These two make a killer combo, honestly! It’s no surprise though because they contain both coconut, jojoba and argan oil all in one product! When shopping for the perfect summer shampoo, make sure whatever product you choose contains ingredients like these.
4. Now is not the time to slack on trimming split ends..
With all the environmental damage your hair will be exposed to, don’t be surprised to see split ends in your hair. This will more than likely happen even if you are protecting your hair, so be sure to be on top of trimming them. If you don’t, your hair won’t look and feel as healthy and volume may become an issue. Try learning how to do a very basic trim on your hair (if you don’t have layers) or make it a point to visit your hair stylist every other month, or every two months. However frequently you need to go is up to you and the health of your hair. Just be sure to not push it too much so your hair looks and feels it’s best!
5. Allow deep conditioning treatments to save your hair.
Deep-conditioning is a girl’s best friend! Luckily for you, there are many amazing and affective treatments to choose from. Of course, the ones I want to recommend to you are from the same line by Juice Organics. Paired with the above mentioned repairing shampoo and conditioner, the repairing hair mask is the perfect way to seal the deal on your new hair care routine. On days when you feel like your hair could use a little moisture boost or once a week, I suggest you try deep conditioning. Here’s how you do it: wash your hair with the repairing shampoo & conditioner, then apply the mask throughout your hair. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Your hair will feel so incredibly refreshed! Hair masks are great to apply after an evening shower or on the weekend, when you need a little tlc.
When searching for the perfect deep conditioning treatment, consider the ingredients these products contain. It’s very important to choose a product with organic ingredients, as it’s safest and most gentle on your locks! Look for ingredients that are most affective in moisturizing too, such as coconut or jojoba oil. (I use jojoba oil as a moisturizer, it’s incredibly beneficial to your beauty routine) Juice Organic’s repairing hair mask actually contains all of these ingredients, including aloe, borage seed oil, Vitamin B5, argan, coconut and jojoba oil. One things for sure, this hair mask is extremely nourishing!
